Operating Lease – ‘off balance-sheet’ financing tool, which improve financial ratios such as gearing. The rentals are significantly lower than other methods of financing as they amortise to the resale value of the asset for the Lessor at the end of the period of use.

Finance Lease – the Lessor purchases the asset on the client’s behalf and the client pays reduced rentals for the benefit of the asset throughout its useful working life, which can be offset against taxable profits. The majority of the sales proceeds on lease termination are passed back to the client.

Hire/Lease Purchase – the purchase of an asset and paying for it by instalments. At the end of the agreement legal title of the assets passes to the client. Throughout the agreement period the client has ownership of the asset for accounting and taxation purposes.
